There are three kinds of feedback great leaders use every day.
But good managers don’t. Here they are 👇
The best leaders create a psychologically safe environment where there is a lot feedback. In all directions.
Between peers. To the boss. And from the boss.
And it’s driven by one thing: an unambiguous motivation to help one another and the team as a whole improve over the long term.
The feedback comes in three forms:
- Positive reinforcement – Acknowledging one another’s efforts and encouraging behaviours aligned with the team’s values
- Improvement advice – Coaching one another to higher levels of performance
- Accountability – Holding one another accountable when we don’t meet our commitments or the expected standards of behaviour
That’s it. It’s not complicated, but it doesn’t mean it’s easy to get started either.
Good leaders do one or two sometimes. But great leaders do all three all the time.
