About 10 years ago I was thinking about moving on from my job at the time.
There was nothing ‘wrong’ with the job, I was pretty good at the work, and I liked the people I worked with.
But I had a sense that I needed to move on. I felt a bit too comfortable and didn’t feel like I was being challenged or learning new skills.
I asked a friend for advice, and he suggested I read two articles from Harvard Business Review.
He said at the time: “I doubt you’ll find ‘the answer’ in either of them, but there may be a few ideas which help your thinking. Good luck with it all.”
I did find them very helpful, and soon after I resigned and started my own company.
In the years since, I’ve forwarded them to other friends who asked me for advice about a potential career change.
My warning about these articles comes from the fact that these two articles now have a 100% strike rate: the recipients have all left their current jobs within a few months. So, read at your own risk!
Of course, people who are thinking about leaving their jobs, often do. And it’s unlikely that a couple of articles really made much difference.
But they are worthwhile in their own right, and a worthwhile read for anyone considering their career options.
Check them out, links to both articles are below.
