What if all the workers in New York went home feeling better about themselves after an engaging day of work… what difference would it make?
8 million people live in NYC. Half of them work. And the same number of people ride the subway each day.
And the Financial Times reports that only 20% of workers are engaged in their work.
So, it’s no surprise that the subway rush hour mood is bleak.
But what if we lifted workforce engagement to 50%? 60%? Or even 80%?
It would have a massive impact on productivity. Highly engaged workers are three times as productive as disengaged workers.
Imagine the progress on existential opportunities and threats – climate change, inequality, hunger, social division – facing society.
But we’d also have a massive impact on how people felt about themselves.
Because how we feel at work affects how we show up as partners, parents, friends and community members outside of work.
So, imagine what it would mean for a city like New York, if millions of people went home feeling better about themselves.
It would do wonders for social harmony. When millions of people in one city are engaged in work that enhances – rather than competes with – their lives.
As my friend Chiara in New York said… if nothing else, the subway would be a friendlier place to be 😀!
